A Cozy Pittsburgh In-Home Newborn Session (And Why You Don’t Need to Clean Your Whole House)

There is something so special about photographing a newborn at home. The slow morning light, siblings peeking into the nursery, coffee cups on the kitchen counter, and the quiet in-between moments — it all tells your story.

One of the first things parents say when they book an in-home newborn session is: “Do I need to clean my whole house?” The answer is simple: No. Absolutely not. You only need to tidy the spaces we plan to use for photos. And I am happy to help remove any items that might be a distraction in your photos!

The Best Rooms for In-Home Newborn Photos

We typically choose 1–3 areas of your home that have the best natural light. Popular options include:

  • The nursery

  • The master bedroom

  • The family room

  • The kitchen

These spaces photograph beautifully because they usually have larger windows and neutral surroundings. I’ll guide you ahead of time in choosing the best spots — you don’t have to figure that out alone.

It’s All About the Light

Newborn sessions usually take place mid-morning, when the light is soft and flattering. Before your session, I’ll have you think about where the light is coming from around that time of day.

  • Does your bedroom get bright morning light?

  • Is your living room softly lit mid-morning?

  • Is the nursery glowing around 10am?

We’ll choose the room with the most natural light at that time.

And if it’s warm outside, we can absolutely step outdoors for a few photos. Front porches, back patios, and even a shaded yard can add beautiful variety.

What If It’s Cloudy — or My Home Doesn’t Have Great Light?

This is where experience matters. While I love the look of natural light, I am also highly skilled in using off-camera flash in a way that mimics natural light. That means:

  • Your photos will still feel light, soft, and organic

  • Overcast skies won’t affect your session

  • Homes with limited windows can still look bright and airy

  • Your gallery will stay consistent with my style

Even if you prefer the look of “natural light photography,” you want a photographer who can recreate that look in any lighting situation. Off-camera flash allows me to maintain beautiful, consistent images no matter what the weather does or how your home is positioned.

The Goal: Stress-Free and Beautiful

The beauty of an in-home newborn session is that you don’t have to go anywhere. You don’t have to pack a diaper bag. You don’t have to worry about the weather. And you definitely don’t have to deep clean your house.

Just clear a few surfaces, make the beds, open the blinds — and I’ll take care of the rest.

Your job is to soak in your baby. Mine is to create timeless images you’ll treasure forever.

If you're expecting and live in Pittsburgh, I’d love to document this season for your family. Reach out to talk more about scheduling a newborn session!
